An OpenFlow Compliant Smart Switch for monitoring applications

چکیده

In this paper we propose a novel hardware-software co-design vision that aims at enhancing flexibility and reusability of hardware based packet forwarding engines. In particular, we move on the path of the well-known OpenFlow architecture. However, although such approach is certainly powerful, it is biased towards routing-related applications: its main goal is to allow the software control plane to arbitrarily route a packet flow. We believe that a similar paradigm, encompassing high performance packet forwarding hardware driven by a flexible software control plane, may be beneficial even to other kinds of applications, like monitoring and measurements. Unfortunately, the primitives that the OpenFlow protocol provides are in many cases not flexible enough for such purposes. For this reason, we propose a flexible packet forwarding architecture based on regular expression that, besides enabling standard-compliant OpenFlow switching, can be easily reconfigured through its control plane to support other kinds of applications. We implemented a working prototype of out architecture by using the well-known NetFPGA board.

OFLOPS: An Open Framework for OpenFlow Switch Evaluation

Recent efforts in software-defined networks, such as OpenFlow, give unprecedented access into the forwarding plane of networking equipment. When building a network based on OpenFlow however, one must take into account the performance characteristics of particular OpenFlow switch implementations. In this paper, we present OFLOPS, an open and generic software framework that permits the developmen...

Enabling Practical Software-defined Networking Security Applications with OFX

Software Defined Networks (SDNs) are an appealing platform for network security applications. However, existing approaches to building security applications on SDNs are not practical because of performance and deployment challenges. Network security applications often need to analyze and process traffic in more advanced ways than SDN data plane implementations, such as OpenFlow, allow. Much of ...

Reinventing NetFlow for OpenFlow Software-Defined Networks

Obtaining flow-level measurements, similar to those provided by Netflow/IPFIX, with OpenFlow is challenging as it requires the installation of an entry per flow in the flow tables. This approach does not scale well with the number of concurrent flows in the traffic as the number of entries in the flow tables is limited and small. Flow monitoring rules may also interfere with forwarding or other...

Clome: The Practical Implications of a Cloud-based Smart Home

A rich body of work in recent years has advocated the use of cloud technologies within a home environment, but nothing has materialized so far in terms of real-world implementations. In this paper, we argue that this is due to the fact that none of these proposals have addressed some of the practical challenges of moving home applications to the cloud. Specifically, we discuss the pragmatic imp...
